Top Brands Automatically Rank Higher on Bing as well as Google

On Bing, as on Google, pages from top brand web sites seem to have an automatic advantage which means they rank in the top search results positions. And content quality, social media signals and backlinks are all associated with pages that rank higher in searches. While only about a quarter (24.7%) of web pages (URLs) that appear on the first page of Bing's search engine results are also included on the first page of Google.

Five other key findings from the study for rank higher are:
  1. Top brands rank higher on Bing as well as Google: Brands seem to automatically rank higher in Bing searches in the same way as they were found to do on Google in Searchmetrics' previous study. However Google's algorithm seems to be a little more effective at identifying brands and separating them from non-brands.
  2. Backlink numbers are closely linked to higher rankings on Bing: In Bing search results (as with Google) the number of backlinks remains very closely connected to how the page ranks. And while both Bing and Google try to reward pages that have a profile of backlinks that looks natural, Bing seems less rigorous about this than Google.

Canonicalisation and SEO

In an SEO campaign you want as much authority to go to your homepage as possible. You submit your site to directories, write articles, post on social networking websites and make regular blog posts that appear on twitter. All this to increase the number of backlinks to your website. And this is a good thing. The problem arrises when you have more than one way to view your homepage (or any page, for that matter).

URL Canonicalisation refers to two or more ways to view the same content, for example http://www.example.co.uk/, http://example.co.uk/, http://www.example.co.uk/index.html, and http://example.co.uk/index.html all load the homepage.

Clever search engines will be able to tell that these are all the same page and pass the authority all to the same place, but other search engines will follow all these links and pass authority to each of them seperately, the overall result being that you do not rank as high as you should. Worse, they could see these as seperate pages and penalise them for having duplicate content.

By removing the additional ‘copies’ of the homepage, the remaining page will get all the authority and your site will raise in the rankings.

There are a number of ways to fix a canonicalisation problem, but it depends on the server you are using. What works on an apache server may not work on a windows server. Below are the most commonly accepted ways of fixing a canonicalisation problem:

Apache:

On an apache server we will use a .htaccess file. If you have an .htaccess file, open it in your text editor of choice. If you do not have a .htaccess file, then you will need to create one. Most text editors will have a problem with saving the file as .htaccess as you have not specified a filename, only an extension. To get around this, open your text editor of choice and save the file as htaccess.txt. When you upload the file to your server, rename it to .htaccess. Now, in your .htaccess file, copy the following code (changing the domain name, obviously):
RewriteEngine on

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.example.co.uk$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.co.uk/$1 [R=301,L]

RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9} /.*index.html HTTP/
RewriteRule ^index.html$ http://www.example.co.uk/$1 [R=301,L]

What this is saying to the server is:

Turn on the URL rewriting module.

If the host is not www.example co.uk,
Redirect the browser to www.example.co.uk.

If the file being requested is www.example.co.uk/index.html,
Redirect the browser to www.example.co.uk/

Other Methods:

The simplest method of pointing a search engine to the right page is the canonical meta tag:
<link href="www.example.co.uk/link-to-right-page.html" rel="canonical"/>

This is an example of what it would look like in xhtml. If you are using html then remove the trailing /.
By putting this code in the head tags of your page you will effectively be telling search engines 'This page does not belong here. If you are reading this content, then please list it under this other url instead, as this is where it DOES belong.'

Overdoing url removals

If you have a lot of urls that you don’t want in Google anymore, you can make the pages return a 404 and wait for Googlebot to recrawl/reindex the pages. This is often the best way. You can also block out an entire directory or a whole site in robots.txt and then use our url removal tool to remove the entire directory from Google’s search results.

What I would not recommend is sending tons (as in, thousands or even tens of thousands) of individual url removal requests to the url removal tool. And I would definitely not recommend making lots (as in, dozens or even more) of Webmaster Central accounts just to remove your own urls. If we see that happening to a point that we consider excessive or abusive, we reserve the right to look at those requests and responding by e.g. broadening, cancelling, or narrowing the requests.

So if you’re sending huge numbers of requests to our url removal tool, it might be a good idea to take a step back and ask whether you should be removing at the directory level instead.

Google Takes on Content Farms: What Does it Mean for SEO?

The Google attack on content farms is a prime example of why sites need to take a diversified SEO approach. Sites that were relying on links solely from content marketing efforts suddenly found that a lot of links are now attached to sites that Google views as spam. Link credit (aka link juice) can have a substantial impact on a site’s trust factor. If a site’s inbound links are now associated with content farms, they lose part of their trust factor.

Content marketing got a lot of attention as a critical component of SEO. And once something is considered an important factor, that’s when the spammers and black hat SEO types swoop in and try to game the system. Since content marketing has taken a hit with the “Farmer Update”, websites should take some time away from content marketing and focus on other components of their link building plan. That is not to say that you should give up on producing a company blog or developing quality content. It just means that major content sites that were adversely affected by the update will have some sorting out to do before they can begin to publish new content. Hopefully the sites that were wrongly labeled as content farms will re-earn their spots in the search results.

Other sites were affected by the update because, while they may have had decent content, they may have had too many Adsense Ads or ads in general that are cluttering the page. The number of ads feeds into the overall user-experience, and a lot of ads comes across as spammy. Too many ads can kill the quality and usability of the content. However, Google hasn’t laid down a clear line of what constitutes “too many” ads. This has many site owners frustrated, as the feel like they’ve been unfairly penalized for trying to monetize their site.
